Description: Drawing on National Academy of Education report Educating for Civic Reasoning, this workshop defines civic reasoning and discourse as entailing knowledge, epistemologies to value complexity, reasoning, and ethical dimensions to respect others, to empathize with people with whom we have disagreements, and commitment to democratic values. With our contested history, complex system of governance, and living in an inter-dependent world, preparation for civic reasoning is essential in public education. It should be taught across the K-12 sector and incorporated in all the content areas, rather than being limited only to civics and history classes. The workshop illustrates how preparation for civic reasoning and discourse can be integrated across the K-12 curriculum. Presenter: Dr. Carol Lee Edwina S.
