Even now, we ha ven’t made up for this loss. Black teachers related to their students in ways that helped promote academic achievement and social and emotional development. A comprehensive education policy must consider recruitment and retention efforts to increase the number of Black teachers. Teacher residencies provide both, and we’ll explore ways to create retention-focused environments that support the thriving and retention of preservice Black teachers based on our work with California Teacher Residencies.
