Description: In this workshop, participants willl learn about the coalition-building process used in Indianapolis to develop
a holistic plan for addressing the educational deficits for children of African ancestry. Members of the local community
engaged in data-driven problem-solving to improve education for Black children city wide. The approach began by
researching and acknowledging our local history in order understand how the challenges facing African American
education today originated. Representatives from the Divine Nine will join this session to share how they plan to invest
in this partnership on behalf of Black student achievement.

Description: The Brown vs. Board decision led to the dismissal of over 38,000 Black educators in 1954. Even now, we ha
ven’t made up for this loss. Black teachers related to their students in ways that helped promote academic achievement
and social and emotional development. A comprehensive education policy must consider recruitment and retention
efforts to increase the number of Black teachers. Teacher residencies provide both, and we’ll explore ways to create
retention-focused environments that support the thriving and retention of preservice Black teachers based on our work
with California Teacher Residencies.
